The polo cap, or dad hat, has been a point of contention in menswear over the past few years. Music producers Mac DeMarco and Yung Lean taught us that it doesn’t always have to be a snapback perched atop your dome, but a lot of us got scared of the dad-hat silhouette during the normcore craze a couple of years ago.
Don’t be afraid, guys. It’s a great silhouette and can be a very flattering look for a lot of guys. And the trend isn’t showing any signs of slowing down this year. The key is to choose the right iteration; don’t just grab a Nakatomi Plaza 1988 cap from Goodwill and call it a day. Look to skate-inspired brands like Supreme, Dime or Raised By Wolves for a clean and well-constructed take on the dad hat.
Any self-respecting sneakerhead will tell you that you need no-show socks for a clean sneaker fit. Don’t listen to them. While no-shows (or no socks at all) still look decent with pinrolled selvedge denim and a nice low-cut sneaker, 2017 is going to see a lot more pairings of cropped pants with calf socks.
Here’s an easy one for you. These things are so damn easy to wear they will make any 'fit look clean. Pair with short sleeves, long sleeves, three-piece suits, t-shirts, Cuban collars (see #5) or really almost anything. Ditch the heavy bracelets and time zone movements for something minimal with a wide, white dial. Look for a case size of 40mm or bigger (I like a 42mm one, personally).
Plain and simple...Don't wear these in 2017.
